Class Descriptions

Intro to Dance (3-4 yrs)

This is a one- hour ballet class that introduces rhythm, movement and basic ballet vocabulary and positions while being in a fun yet disciplined atmosphere. This is a class where every student will leave feeling like a princess and acting like a little lady. No experience required.

Classical Ballet
Ballet is both a discipline and an art form. Ballet requires strength and patience because of its difficult technical elements. Ballet has several schools of study, but all focus on the dancers ability to appear weight less and make even the most difficult steps look effortless. Ballet has various positions and poses which require flexibility in the back, legs, rib cage, and feet. Ballet helps improve coordination, flexibility, strength, musicality, fluidity and grace. Body placement, flexibility, alignment, strength and technique are achieved through barre and center floor work.

Pointe
Pointe class focuses on the transference of ballet steps from demi-pointe to full pointe, which is made possible by specially reinforced shoes called pointe shoes. Pointe class is open only to advanced dancers who have studied dance for several years and is introduced only when a student has developed sufficient strength in the feet and legs & ankles necessary for this discipline. Students under the age of 12 are not allowed in this class. Permission is needed by the instructor to enroll in this class.

Contemporary Ballet
Contemporary Ballet is a fusion of classical ballet & modern. Contemporary Ballet allows dancers to utilize their technique in new and exciting ways. Focusing on the connection of mind and body, dancers are encouraged to express their emotions through dance. Limited only by the anatomical limits of their body, dancers are encouraged to explore their body’s full range of motion. Contemporary, like modern is limited only to artistic conceptualization. Three years of Classical Ballet training is recommended for this class.

Lyrical
Lyrical is a dance form using both ballet and jazz techniques. It utilizes human emotion to drive the movement. The choreographer uses the music's lyrics or tone as inspiration for choreography. The class will consist of a warm-up/stretch, across the floor exercises and a short combination. The dancer will learn to use their feelings and emotions to connect to the music when dancing. They will also learn and execute several different types of jumps and turns as this dance
form is technical as well as emotional. This class focuses on pushing ones flexibility, body lines, musicality and performance quality.

Modern
Modern Dance is best defined as an art form intended to break the technical barriers of ballet. Modern strives to find the body’s fullest potential of movement while encouraging artistic individualism & expression. Classes begin with a thorough warm-up, meant to release tension in the body, while remaining connected to one’s breath and engagement of the core. This prepares each dancer for a fast paced class of movement exploration. Dancers will learn choreographed works, and be encouraged to develop their own dance style through dance improvisational techniques. Humphrey & Limon Techniques will be taught as well as Post Modern Dance.

Jazz
Jazz is a high energy technique class famous for it's powerful and exciting movements. By incorporating the many different forms of jazz, from Contemporary, Classical, Pop to Theatre Jazz we aim to create well rounded dancers. Classes begin with an intense warm-up designed to work on isolations of the body, strength and flexibility which in turn guides students in improving their technique. Focus is on breaking down turns, leaps, placement and building a dance vocabulary which will bring the dance student to the next level. Students have fun while learning in this challenging class!
**Professional Track Jazz class is tailored to the serious dancer.

Tap
Tap dance is a rhythmic exploration of sound using your feet as instruments! Tapping is a great way to have fun while improving motor skills and coordination. Technique and a strong emphasis on the fundamentals of tap will be included in each class through warm-up, across the floor and tap turns. Combinations include various styles of tap such as Rhythm Tap and Musical Theatre
Tap. Dances incorporate intricate rhythms and fun footwork to create challenging and exciting choreography.

Hip hop
Hip hop dance represents a cultural movement. It is a dance style originating from the streets of Brooklyn and The Bronx in NYC. This open level class includesa dance warm up followed by funky moves and cool routines. Hip-Hop focuses on street dance, popular dance and video dancing. Break dance and Locking are taught to advanced students. Dancers will build stamina while working on coordination, musicality and style.
